Chapter 1: The Unseen Hero

In the bustling streets of Kyoto, Kazuki Arai lived a quiet life as a part-time bookstore clerk and an aspiring novelist. Reserved and often lost in thought, Kazuki found comfort in words more than people.

One evening, as he locked up the store, he noticed a commotion in the nearby alley. A group of rowdy teens had surrounded someone. Before he could think, Kazuki rushed over, shouting, “Hey, leave him alone!”

The group scattered, revealing a tall young man with a smirk on his lips and bruises on his face.
“Thanks, hero,” the man said, his voice teasing yet grateful.

Kazuki frowned. “You should avoid trouble.”

“I wasn’t looking for it,” the man replied, wincing as he touched his cheek. “Name’s Ren.”

Kazuki sighed, reluctantly offering his hand to help Ren up. That single moment, under the dim glow of the streetlamp, marked the beginning of their unlikely connection.

Chapter 2: Midnight Meetings

Kazuki hadn’t expected to see Ren again, but fate had other plans. A few days later, Ren walked into the bookstore, leaning casually against the counter.
“Hey, bookworm,” Ren said with a grin. “Got anything about heroes saving reckless guys like me?”

Kazuki blinked, stunned by his presence. “Why are you here?”

“Figured I’d thank you properly,” Ren replied, pulling out a small box of pastries. “Plus, I need a place to lay low for a while.”

Though hesitant, Kazuki found himself intrigued by Ren’s carefree attitude. Against his better judgment, he agreed to let Ren hide out in the shop’s storage room after hours.

Over the next few weeks, they spent their nights talking. Ren shared stories of his troubled past, while Kazuki confided his dreams of becoming a novelist. Their conversations grew deeper, and the distance between them began to shrink.

Chapter 3: The Hidden Scar

One stormy evening, Kazuki found Ren sitting alone in the storage room, staring at a small locket in his hand. The usual spark in his eyes was gone.
“What’s that?” Kazuki asked softly.

Ren hesitated before answering, “It belonged to my mom. She… passed away when I was a kid.”

Kazuki sat beside him, his heart aching for the man who always seemed so strong. “I didn’t know.”

Ren chuckled bitterly. “Yeah, well, I don’t usually talk about it. Guess you’re different.”

Kazuki’s hand hovered over Ren’s before finally resting on it. “You don’t have to carry everything alone.”

Ren looked at him, surprised by the tenderness in his voice. For the first time, Kazuki felt the walls Ren had built around himself begin to crack.

Chapter 4: Confessions Under the Stars

The night of the Perseid meteor shower, Ren convinced Kazuki to close the shop early and go stargazing. They found a secluded hill overlooking the city, the sky above them shimmering with falling stars.

“Why’d you bring me here?” Kazuki asked, lying on the grass beside Ren.

Ren turned to him, his expression unusually serious. “Because I wanted to see something beautiful with someone who gets me.”

Kazuki’s breath hitched. “Ren…”

Ren leaned closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Kazuki, you’ve been my anchor. I didn’t think I could feel this way about anyone, but you…”

Before he could finish, Kazuki closed the distance, their lips meeting in a kiss that was hesitant at first but grew deeper with each passing second.

When they finally pulled away, Kazuki whispered, “You’re not as reckless as you think. You’ve saved me too.”

Ren smirked, his usual confidence returning. “Guess that makes us even.”
