The Song of the River King

The Song of the River King

Chapter 1: The Prince’s Pride

Prince Idris, heir to the River Kingdom, was unmatched in beauty and talent. Known for his captivating voice and mastery of the harp, he would sing by the riverbanks, drawing crowds who praised him endlessly. But his pride ran deep, and love was merely a word he scorned.

One day, an old woman, weary and cloaked in mist, approached him by the river.

Old Woman: “A voice as beautiful as yours should know love, or it is but an empty gift.”

Prince Idris (with a haughty laugh): “Love is for those who seek meaning in shadows. My voice alone is enough for this world.”

The old woman’s eyes flashed as she muttered an incantation. In an instant, the prince felt himself pulled under the current, scales glistening on his skin as he transformed into a magnificent river serpent.

Chapter 2: The Curse of the River Serpent

Days turned to weeks as Prince Idris, now bound to the river, roamed its waters, silent and unseen. He longed for the touch of the sun, the warmth of human voice. His songs were now ripples that no one heard.

Idris: “I would give anything to feel human again, to sing once more.”

But the river was his prison, its flow mocking him as it carried on without pause.

Chapter 3: The Fisherman’s Tune

One evening, a fisherman named Kael appeared at the riverbank. He was young, with calloused hands and eyes that spoke of kindness. He cast his net into the river, whistling a simple tune that stirred something deep within the water.

Kael (with a laugh as he spoke to the water): “If you’re listening, river spirit, join me in this song.”

Idris felt a pang in his chest as Kael’s voice echoed through the depths. He surfaced just enough to watch, golden eyes meeting Kael’s bright ones for the briefest moment.

Kael (startled): “You’re real…”

Chapter 4: A Bond in the Moonlight

Night after night, Kael returned to the river, talking and singing as if to an old friend. Idris would surface, unseen yet listening. One night, emboldened, Kael spoke aloud.

Kael: “If only you could speak, I’d tell you how I long to know who you truly are.”

The river stilled, and for the first time, Idris’s voice whispered back, echoing like wind over water.

Idris: “I am bound by a curse, unable to reveal myself until I know love.”

Kael’s heart raced, but he stayed by the river’s edge, his voice gentle. “Then I’ll stay until we find a way to break it.”

Chapter 5: The Power of a True Song

One night, Kael sang a song he’d written, a tune filled with hope and the promise of loyalty. Idris rose from the depths, scales shimmering under the moon, and for a moment, Kael could see him in all his serpentine glory.

Kael (reaching out): “You’re beautiful.”

The touch of Kael’s hand against his scales sent a pulse through Idris’s body, and a radiant light engulfed the river. The current stilled, the air thick with magic as Idris’s form shifted, scales melting away to reveal human skin. The prince stood, breathless, eyes locked with Kael’s.

Idris: “You broke the spell, Kael.”

Kael (smiling, tears in his eyes): “Then sing for me, Prince.”

Chapter 6: The Song of the River King

As dawn broke, Idris’s voice rose over the riverbanks, rich and vibrant. The entire kingdom awoke to its melody, and the old woman’s curse was dispelled.

Idris (taking Kael’s hand): “I once believed love was a hollow word, but you showed me it is the only song worth singing.”

Kael (softly): “And you, my prince, are the only song worth hearing.”

Epilogue: Harmony Restored

The river thrived once more, its waters sparkling with new life. Prince Idris, now King, ruled with Kael at his side, their love as endless as the river’s flow. On moonlit nights, the kingdom would gather by the banks to hear the king’s song, a melody that told of a curse, a fisherman, and the love that set him free.

And thus, the river sang not just of water and reeds, but of love found in the most unexpected of places.
